About the museum

The Galerija umjetnina (Gallery of Fine Arts) opened in 1931. Its holdings now comprise more than 5,200 works, from the 14th century to recent artistic production. Alongside works by Croatian authors, it holds works by artists from Yugoslavia, Italy, Germany, Austria, France and Czechia.

The building was constructed in 1792 to a design by the Split builder Petar Kurir as the city’s first hospital. Its present neo-Renaissance appearance results from the extension of 1872 designed by Josip Slade, when it received a south wing and a central atrium surrounded by a colonnade. In the late seventies of the 20th century it was adapted for the Muzej narodne revolucije (Museum of the People’s Revolution), which ceased operating in 1991; since 1996 the Galerija umjetnina and the Multimedijalni kulturni centar (Multimedia Cultural Centre) have been housed here. The adaptation, reconstruction and extension from 2004 to 2009 were designed by Vinko Peračić.

The exhibition of the collection, on 2,200 square metres, presents around 400 works spanning almost seven centuries. It begins on the first floor with works by old masters (1400–1900), continues with anthology works of Croatian modernism (1900–1950), and the second half of the 20th century is represented by masterpieces of high modernism (1950–1970). An extension to the Baroque Cornaro bastion is planned, which will provide space for temporary exhibitions, storerooms and multimedia halls.
