About the museum

The origins of museum activity and the collecting of monuments in Split are linked to the Papalić Palace. In the 15th and 16th centuries Dmine Papalić and Marko Marulić visited the ruins of Salona, studied the ancient inscriptions and built them into the courtyard of the Papalić Palace. The Gothic-Renaissance palace was built in the 15th and 16th centuries and, with its courtyard, loggia, well and ceremonial hall on the first floor, is among the most beautiful monuments in Split.

The City Library in the Bernardi Palace had been collecting historically important objects since 1910; on 4 January 1945 the library and the City Museum signed an agreement on the transfer of material so that the museum could work independently. In summer 1949 the museum received its present name, Muzej grada Splita, and on 23 November 1952 it was ceremonially opened to the public in the renovated premises of the Papalić Palace. The last major renovation took place from 1984 and lasted four years, and the complete permanent exhibition opened in 1992.

The museum collects, preserves and presents the material and spiritual past of the city. The most representative pieces from its collections are shown in the new permanent exhibition on the ground floor and two upper floors, which tells the story of Split’s development. The museum also manages the Galerija Emanuel Vidović, the Basements of Diocletian’s Palace, the Stara gradska vijećnica (Old Town Hall), the medieval walkway above the northern wall of the palace, the Mletačka kula (Venetian Tower) and the Jugoistočna kula (South-Eastern Tower), and the Muzej vode (Museum of Water).
