About the museum

The Gradski muzej Karlovac (Karlovac Town Museum) was founded by decision of the City Council on 18 December 1904 to preserve the memories and antiquities of the town. It was initially housed temporarily in the town hall, and its first collection came from gifts and donations. Between the wars the museum was almost inactive, and after the Second World War its work was resumed; in 1945 a gallery was also founded. Professional work began in 1952 under the direction of Ivan Vrbanić.

From 1953 the museum has been housed in the Baroque palace on Strossmayer Square, which the Karlovac general Vuk Krsto Frankopan had built around 1631. The history of this oldest palace in Karlovac and the history of the museum have been intertwined since then. The holdings are divided into archaeological, historical, cultural-historical, ethnological, natural history and gallery collections, and the gallery is housed in a separate building.

The Gradski muzej Karlovac closed its doors to the public on 1 December 2022 because of the structural renovation of the building. After a comprehensive energy renovation, a new permanent display is being prepared that will present the history, heritage and life of Karlovac in a contemporary way; the concept for the display received a positive opinion from the Croatian Museum Council. The museum is part of the institution Muzeji grada Karlovca (Karlovac City Museums), together with the Galerija “Vjekoslav Karas“, the Stari grad Dubovac and the Muzej Domovinskog rata Karlovac – Turanj.
