About the museum
Dubovac takes its name from the oak forest (dubova) that once surrounded the hill above the River Kupa. The hill has been strategically important since prehistory, and finds begin in the Copper Age. Dubovac is first mentioned in 1339, when it acquired its first parish priest. The Ottomans destroyed it on Good Friday 1578, and the following year refugees founded the new town of Karlovac; only the castle remained.
The owners were the Šudar, Blagaj, Frankopan and Zrinski families. The Ratno vijeće (War Council), which administered the Croatian Military Frontier, bought the castle and estate from Juraj Zrinski, and it was later held by the Karlovac military command. Since 1896 it has been owned by the town. It took on its present form at the end of the 15th century, when border fortresses were being strengthened; in 1511 Bernardin Frankopan noted in a letter the transition from mainly wooden to stone construction. The square, two-storey Branič Tower rises above three round two-storey towers.
From the Branič Tower there is a view of Karlovac and parts of three countries. The Karlovac City Museums organise exhibitions and educational programmes in the castle.
