About the museum
The Zavičajni muzej Ozalj was founded in 1971 and continues the work of the museum of the society “Braća Hrvatskoga Zmaja” (Brothers of the Croatian Dragon), which Emil Laszowski had established in 1930 in the Old Castle of Ozalj. That museum had a Zrinski and Frankopan collection, a picture gallery, a hall of coats of arms and flags, and an archive and library. The society received the Old Castle as a gift in 1928.
The Old Castle on the hill above the Kupa river has its present form from the 13th century; from 1244 it was held by several noble families: the Babonić, Frankopan, Zrinski, Petazzi, Perlas, Batthyány and Thurn-Taxis families. The entrance tower from 1599 is the work of Juraj IV Zrinski. The Zrinski palas (residential wing), dating from the 16th century and bearing an inscription from 1556 above the entrance, was later converted into a granary.
The museum holds archaeological, ethnographic, gallery, cultural-historical, sacral, documentary and photographic collections. The display covers around 6,000 years of history: the Neolithic and Eneolithic, the Bronze Age, the Roman period, the migration period, the early Middle Ages and the era of the Frankopan and Zrinski families, with local history taken up to 1918. A special section is devoted to the painter Slava Raškaj, born in Ozalj.
