About the museum
The Zavičajni muzej Donja Kupčina (Donja Kupčina Local Museum) was founded in 1973, as one of the first examples in Croatia of gathering and preserving local groups of village residential and farm buildings in the seventies of the 20th century. It is located in a village of archaic structure with distinctive hamlets that arose in the era of family cooperatives (zadruge).
In the mid-20th century, five buildings of exceptional cultural and historical value were moved from the hamlet to the museum site: three residential buildings (čardaci and single-storey houses, prizemnice) and farm buildings (a stable, a storehouse and a bread oven). They are built of oak planks and date from the late 19th century, and they represent typical residential and farm buildings of the villages of Pokuplje, Turopolje and Croatian Posavina.
Over three decades the collection was built up with objects brought in by the people of Donja Kupčina themselves: textiles and folk costumes, furniture, ceramic, iron and wooden vessels, farm tools, textile-processing devices, and equipment for lifting and hauling wooden buildings. The museum also has an old carriage and, in the courtyard, a well with a lever (zdenac na šibu) and a wooden top. An exhibition section shows everyday life in Donja Kupčina, flax processing and a workshop making opanci (traditional footwear).
