About the museum
The origins of the Gradski muzej Sisak go back to 1942, when the society “Muzej i knjižnica grada Siska” (Museum and Library of the Town of Sisak) was founded; the museum has borne the name Gradski muzej Sisak since 1945. Since 1957 it has been housed in a building from the late 19th century in Ulica kralja Tomislava (King Tomislav Street). Until 1921 the building belonged to the locksmith Nikola Karas, in whose workshop Josip Broz Tito learned the locksmith’s trade from 1907 to 1910.
The museum has archaeological, numismatic, cultural-historical and ethnographic departments, as well as a gallery department. Separate visitor locations also belong to it: the Holandska kuća (Dutch House) with the Info-centre of industrial heritage, the Centar znanja (Knowledge Centre) and the Munjara planetarium, the archaeological site Siscia in situ in front of the cathedral, and the Stari grad (Old Town), which has been closed since the earthquake of 29 December 2020.
Because a new permanent display is being prepared, the exhibition space in Ulica kralja Tomislava is currently closed to visitors.
