About the museum
The Muzej Turopolja (Turopolje Museum) was founded in 1960 in the centre of Velika Gorica, in the former building of the Turopoljska vijećnica (Turopolje Town Hall) on Trg kralja Tomislava (King Tomislav Square). It keeps collections that follow the history and culture of Turopolje, a historic noble municipality in the lowlands south of Zagreb. The archaeological collection includes finds from the Pleistocene fauna, among them the tusks and teeth of a woolly mammoth, 20,000 to 30,000 years old. The ethnographic collection covers costumes, textiles and jewellery, as well as the traditional household and economy. The art collection grew out of a gallery collection, and its works are important for the culture and history of the region.
The museum also manages separate locations: the Modić Bedeković manor in Donja Lomnica, the local collection of Vukomerićke Gorice and the Etno kuća (Ethno House) in Ščitarjevo. The manor was built in 1806 of oak planks (planjke), has been protected as a cultural monument since 1972, and its restoration was completed in 2013. The museum is also known for the Perunfest event and for the jurjevski ophodi (St George’s processions) of Turopolje.
The building in Velika Gorica was damaged in the earthquake. It was closed to visitors on 15 December 2025 for a complete renovation and the fitting out of the new permanent display. In the meantime the museum is running programmes in the Interpretation Centre in the courtyard building at Šetalište Franje Lučića 15.
