About the museum
The Interpretacijski centar Bakar is part of the route “Putevima Frankopana” and deals with the influence of the Frankopan and Zrinski families on politics and the economy. The bay as a link between the sea and the hilly hinterland, the strategic position and a favourable microclimate helped Bakar, under Zrinski and Frankopan rule, become their most important port, shipbuilding and trading centre. Trade with Venice and other Mediterranean centres grew especially strong in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The steep caravan routes that led from Gorski kotar to Bakar were trade highways along which goods travelled through Frankopan territory. In the 16th century Bakar received great privileges and became the seat of the administrators of the Frankopan towns of Hreljin, Drivenik, Bribir and Grobnik. Petar Zrinski gave trade and the port complete freedom with only minor burdens, so Bakar was the port with the strongest traffic on the entire Croatian Littoral.
