About the museum
Nova Kraljevica Castle was built in 1654 at the entrance to the Bakar Bay by Petar Zrinski and his wife Ana Katarina Frankopan as a sumptuous residence. Tradition has it that in the court chapel in 1669 Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan swore an oath during the conspiracy, so the castle is linked with the origins of the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy (zrinsko-frankopanska urota).
Two visitor attractions operate in the restored part of the castle. The Small Museum of Fisheries and Shipbuilding is located on the first floor and is run by the Pomorski i povijesni muzej Hrvatskog primorja (Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral). The collection of ship models of the Brodogradilište Kraljevica (Kraljevica Shipyard) was donated to the museum in 2015, and selected objects were moved to the castle in April 2024. It comprises 30 ship models built at the shipyard after the Second World War, models of 19th-century sailing ships, pictures of ships and part of the shipbuilding tools from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection is a protected cultural good. In the tower, objects of the fishing tradition of the Kraljevica area are displayed, such as fish traps, osti (fishing gear), hooks, nets and longlines.
The Kraljevica Interpretation Centre is part of the route “Putevima Frankopana” and deals with the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy, one of the most important events of early modern Croatian history.
