About the museum

Muzej otoka Brača is located in Škrip, the oldest settlement on the island, where life has continuously unfolded for more than five thousand years. The name of the place derives from the Latin word scrupus, which denoted sharp, coarse stone such as that found in the hinterland of the Roman quarries.

The museum complex consists of traditional houses next to Illyrian ramparts, a Roman mausoleum and a Croatian tvrdalj (fortified residence). The rooms display a rich lapidarium of Roman, late antique and early medieval architectural and sculptural monuments, among which the figure of Hercules, finds from Mirje and a cast of the Povaljski prag (Povalj Threshold) stand out. Other halls house an ethnographic collection on the island's farming, livestock and stonemasonry, as well as valuable domestic furniture. Above the Roman mausoleum rises the kula Radojković (Radojković Tower) from the 16th century, built during the Venetian–Ottoman wars.
