About the museum
In the 16th century, Glagolitic priests from Poljica founded the Pustinja Blaca hermitage after fleeing to Brač ahead of the Ottomans. Their first shelter was a cave walled up with stones. Along the steep cliff, the hermits gradually built the church and the monastery, as well as residential and farm buildings. They turned the woods into vineyards and olive groves and, over four centuries, acquired a large estate, trading ships, a rich library and a printing press.
To this day, the hermitage can only be reached on foot, along the path that mules and horses once used for centuries. The museum today preserves the monastery's surviving inventory, including the valuable astronomical heritage of the last hermit, Don Nikola Milićević, who died in 1963. Pustinja Blaca is a protected cultural monument and a unique testament to labour and endurance.
