About the museum
The Muzej Gacke is a local heritage museum in the centre of Otočac, in the building of the Gacko pučko otvoreno učilište, with which it is associated. It has borne its present name since 1997, when it was officially founded by the decision on the establishment of the Muzej Gacke; 1962, when the Narodno sveučilište Marko Orešković was founded and museum and gallery activity began, is often given as its starting year.
Through field research, donations and purchases, the museum collects material on Otočac and Gacka, including Brinje and Vrhovine. The collection comprises nine collections: archaeological, ethnographic, cultural-historical, fine art, the memorial collection of Stojan Aralica, numismatic, historical, the Častek collection and a photography collection. The Iapodian archaeological collection was formed in 1969 in cooperation with the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb.
The permanent display has been gradually renewed since 2001. In 2024 a project for a new permanent display began, intended to create a modern museum with multimedia and various interpretation tools. Because the ground floor of the building is being adapted, the permanent display is temporarily not accessible to visitors, while museum events take place throughout the year.
