About the museum
The Tvrđava Nehaj (Nehaj Fortress), the symbol of the town of Senj, was built in 1558 under the supervision of Ivan Lenković, captain and general of the Croatian Military Frontier, and Herbart VIII. of Auersperg-Turjak. It was built from the material of demolished churches, monasteries and houses that stood outside the city walls.
The fortress is cube-shaped, oriented to the points of the compass; it is 18 metres high and 23 metres wide. The walls are two to three and a half metres thick and end in a crowning parapet with five small corner towers. The walls contain around one hundred loopholes and eleven large cannon openings. Inside is a cistern above which are the coats of arms of Lenković, Archduke Ferdinand I and Auersperg; on the ground floor the foundations of the early Romanesque church of St George from the 11th century can be seen.
In the fortress are the collection Senjski uskoci (Senj Uskoks) and the Senjska primorska kapetanija (Senj Coastal Captaincy), and the permanent exhibitions Senjske crkve kroz povijest (Churches of Senj Through History) and Gradski i plemićki grbovi Senja (Town and Noble Coats of Arms of Senj). Cultural and musical events are held on the second floor, and the top serves as a lookout with a view over the Croatian Littoral, the islands of Rab, Goli, Prvić, Cres and Krk, Gorski kotar, Učka and Velebit. The fortress is run by the Gradski muzej Senj (Senj Town Museum).
