About the museum
The Gradski muzej Senj is housed in the palace of the Vukasović family, one of Senj’s most distinguished families, also known as the house of Marija Terezija. The palace was built in the 14th and 15th centuries and is an outstanding example of secular architecture in Senj. Over the centuries it was repeatedly extended and remodelled, so Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements can all be recognised in it.
The palace was damaged in the Second World War. The restoration and arrangement of the museum collections in the 1950s was begun by honorary conservator Vuk Krajač and continued by Ante Glavičić, honorary conservator of the City of Senj. The restoration was completed in 1965.
The museum holds an archaeological and hydroarchaeological collection, the Glagolitic heritage of Senj, a collection of photographs and postcards, the ethnographic collection Bunjevci, the natural history collection Velebit, a numismatic and art collection, a collection of weapons and military equipment, and material on Senj and its people in the Homeland War. The museum also manages the Nehaj Fortress.
