About the museum
Kuća Velebita is the visitor and information centre of Northern Velebit National Park in Krasno, one of the largest mountain villages in Velebit. Its modern and attractive display presents the natural and cultural values of the park throughout the year. Here visitors can obtain information about the park, Krasno and the surroundings, and buy tickets for the park as well as souvenirs.
The exhibition is spread over four floors and covers the climate, species and habitats, the cultural heritage, and the geology and underground of Northern Velebit. The emphasis is on the deep potholes (jame) as a special feature of the park: visitors learn about the geology and formation of the potholes, the history and techniques of their exploration, and the distinctive animal life of the underground. A particular attraction is the experience of entering a pothole in a special “lift”.
The whole house is accessible to people with disabilities: for blind and partially sighted visitors there are exhibits with legends in Braille and a tactile guiding line, each floor has an engraved floor plan, and a lift serves all floors. The institution offers school and university programmes and educational workshops.
