About the museum
The Muzej Like Gospić was founded in 1958 as the Muzej Općine Gospić and has been housed in its present building since 1965. The building is a cultural monument built at the end of the 18th century as the office and residence of the lieutenant general of the Lika Regiment in the era of the Military Frontier. In 1970 the museum became a regional museum responsible for movable heritage and immovable monuments in Lika, today the continental part of Lika-Senj County.
By classification the museum is a complex museum: it comprises an archaeological department with a lapidarium, a numismatic department, a cultural-historical department (with a collection of weapons and a collection of furniture), an ethnographic department and a gallery department, as well as a professional library. A special feature is the art event Lički likovni anale (Likanale), which has brought artists together since 1966 and whose works form the museum’s gallery holdings. The museum also carries out archaeological research, among other places at the medieval site Crikvine in Smiljan and at Gradina in Udbina.
The museum also looks after the birthplace of Nikola Tesla in Smiljan, since 1964, and in 2006 the Memorial Centre “Nikola Tesla” opened as its separate museum unit.
