About the museum

Muzej grada Trogira (Trogir Town Museum) was founded in 1963 and opened to the public on 9 May 1966. It is located near the northern town gate, in the palace of the Garagnin family, which has been called Garagnin – Fanfogna since 1840 and came to Trogir from Venice at the end of the 16th century. The palace consists of two blocks of Romanesque and Gothic houses which, in the second half of the 18th century, were extended and merged into a single complex to a design by Ignacije Macanović.

The permanent display on the upper floor presents the history of the town and its surroundings from prehistory to the early 20th century. The archaeological collection shows the earliest traces of settlement, Hellenistic and Roman Trogir, and seafaring and trade, while the collections of medieval and early modern cultural history show the development of the town from the 13th to the early 20th century. The single-storey southern section houses the Lapidarium and the Galerija Cate Dujšin Ribar, and the multi-storey northern section preserves, in its original early 19th-century interior, the library founded by the Archbishop of Split, Ivan Luka Garagnin.

The library holds 5,582 titles from the late 15th to the mid-20th century, with its original furniture and ceiling decoration painted with portraits of philosophers and writers. Exhibitions are held in the palace’s atrium, and educational workshops take place every month in the educational zone. The museum also offers the storytelling tour “Katarinina kuća – priča o palači i muzeju”.
