About the museum
The Muzej policije (Police Museum) is a specialist museum within the institution: it collects, preserves and displays objects relating to the history and present of the police forces in Croatia. Its task is to preserve the heritage of forces which, despite changes in the social and political system, have essentially kept the same activity: the fight against crime and the maintenance of public order and peace.
The permanent display follows the development of the police services from the town guards, the oružništvo and žandarmerija (gendarmerie) and the militia to the creation of the Republic of Croatia and the structure of the modern Croatian police, alongside a collection of weapons and a presentation of the role of the police in the Homeland War. The museum collections hold just over three thousand objects: uniforms, equipment, weapons, vehicles and other items.
A special feature is the collection of forged artworks, which the museum has been gathering since 2009 from final court proceedings. From it came the travelling exhibition “Ljepota lažnog sjaja” (The Beauty of False Shine), which has toured several Croatian towns. The museum also holds a library of specialist literature.
