About the museum

The Židovski muzej u Zagrebu opened in September 2016 on the occasion of the 210th anniversary of the founding of the Židovska općina Zagreb, and is housed in the community building in Palmotićeva Street. The display grew out of a collection of sacred art that the Jewish community had gathered over many years.

More than 150 objects are on display, and the whole display follows the Jewish life cycle. Among the most valuable exhibits are Torah scrolls, and the oldest books, from the 16th century, come from the Šikova knjižnica (Šik Library). Metal and textile objects are also shown: the crown and mantle of the Torah, a hanukkiah from 1860, an eternal light from 1876, and objects for the Sabbath. The display also tells of the contribution of Zagreb’s Jews to culture, art, architecture and the economy, and of the tragedy of the Holocaust.
