Hrvatski pomorski muzej Split

Maritime museum in the Tvrđava Gripe (Gripe Fortress) in Split, housing the oldest torpedo in the world, ship models and vessels from Croatia’s maritime heritage.

Opening hoursAdmission €3.50

About the museum

The Hrvatski pomorski muzej Split is a direct successor to various components of Split’s maritime museum tradition. The Pomorski muzej u Splitu was founded in 1925; later, maritime heritage was also cultivated in the Vojno-pomorski muzej u Splitu, alongside collections of underwater archaeology and a museum of shipbuilding at the Split shipyard. The owner and founder of today’s museum is the City of Split; the City Council adopted the formal decision to establish it in 1997.

The museum researches, collects, preserves and presents the tangible and intangible maritime heritage of the Croatian Adriatic coast, from prehistory to the present day. It is housed in the Tvrđava Gripe, a 17th-century monument and a uniquely well-preserved fortification in Split. In the courtyard are large exhibits, including the bow of the steamship “Bakar” and the gajeta “Perina” from 1857, one of the oldest vessels on the eastern Adriatic coast.

The permanent exhibition follows the development of ships and navigation from antiquity to the present, as well as merchant shipping, fishing and steamship navigation. The second part is devoted to naval history, from the Illyrian liburnians to naval battles in the Homeland War. A special place is held by the Battle of Vis of 1866 (Viški boj) and the torpedo collection in a separate hall, which displays the oldest surviving torpedo in the world, dating from 1866.
