About the museum
The Muzej seljačkih buna (Museum of Peasant Revolts) opened on 14 October 1973, on the 400th anniversary of the Peasant Revolt, together with the monumental Spomenik Seljačkoj buni i Matiji Gupcu (Monument to the Peasant Revolt and Matija Gubec) by Antun Augustinčić. It is housed in the renovated Baroque castle of the Oršić family in Gornja Stubica, built on the site of a medieval fortified town. The author of the historical study for the first permanent display was the historian Josip Adamček, and the artistic design was by Edo Kovačević with Zorislav Drempetić Hrčić.
Since 1993 the museum has been an integral part of the Muzej Hrvatskog zagorja (Museum of Croatian Zagorje). The central part of the present display, devoted to the development of feudalism in Croatian Zagorje, opened in 2002 on the upper floor of the castle. The chapel holds a display of the sacred art of Croatian Zagorje, and the basement a display on wine-growing and cellar culture.
Since 1978 the museum has organised the Trijenale zagorskog suvenira (Triennial of Zagorje Souvenirs) every third year, and since 2015 the programme “Muzej prije škole” (Museum Before School) in the week before the school year begins. For the 40th anniversary of the museum and the 440th anniversary of the revolt, a multimedia video mapping, “Gubec teatar”, was staged on the monument. Since 1 March 2024 the museum has been closed for the complete and energy renovation of the castle and its grounds, financed by European Union funds; the new display is planned for spring 2027.
