About the museum
The gallery was founded in 1970, when the sculptor Antun Augustinčić (1900–1979) gave his native Klanjec his own sculptural oeuvre, created over some fifty years of work. The gallery building, designed by architect A. Lozica, was opened to the public in 1976 with an exhibition of representative works selected by the artist himself, and in the same year the institution was established as a museum.
The current exhibition is based on the permanent display of 1990, which came about after two revisions of the first display by Augustinčić. It presents the sculptor’s work in a thematic and comparative way and comprises two linked parts: the indoor display, divided into intimate sculpture, portraits and public monuments, and the sculpture park around the gallery.
Augustinčić is known to the wider public for monumental works such as “Peace” (Mir) in front of the United Nations building in New York and the Monument to the Peasant Revolt and Matija Gubec in Gornja Stubica. The gallery also presents him as a master of intimate sculpture, especially female and children’s nudes and torsos, and of psychologically powerful portraits. Since 1981 the journal Anali Galerije Antuna Augustinčića has also been published.
