Spomen-područje Jasenovac

Memorial museum next to the site of the former Ciglana camp in Jasenovac presents individual fates in its permanent display, in the context of mass crimes.

About the museum

The Memorial Museum of the Jasenovac Memorial Site opened on 4 July 1968, directly next to the restricted area of the former Ustasha camp III Ciglana Jasenovac. The building's concept was designed by Petar Vovk, the interior of the exhibition hall was shaped by Đuka Kavurić, and on the north wall is a 1968 relief by Dušan Džamonja dedicated to the victims of fascism in Jasenovac.

The first permanent display, whose concept and content were prepared by Ksenija Dešković in the Muzej revolucije naroda Hrvatske (Museum of the Revolution of the Peoples of Croatia), had an exhibition hall and a cinema hall. The second display opened in 1986, and the third, the present one, in 2006.

Today the permanent display places individual personal fates at its centre, in the context of mass crimes, with the aim of encouraging empathy and a critical attitude towards crime and violence. The museum preserves and exhibits material on the Jasenovac camp and on the prisoners of the Jasenovac camp system.
