About the museum
The Zavičajni muzej Konavala was founded in 1974 at the initiative of the Čilipi Tourist Society, to add to the Sunday folklore events. The building in the centre of Čilipi was constructed in 1909 for a village savings bank and cultural hall.
Until the Homeland War (Croatian War of Independence) in 1991, the museum was set up as a typical Konavle house, with an exhibition of men's and women's costumes and embroidery. The collection was assembled from donations by local residents and purchases, under the expert guidance of Katica Benc Bošković. The Muzeji i galerije Konavala also hold the holdings of the Vezilačka udruga Jelke Miš (Jelka Miš Embroidery Association), and a selection from that collection is shown in the permanent display.
The permanent displays include Konavle women's and men's costumes, other textiles, jewellery, weapons, musical instruments, paintings, photographs and household objects.
