About the museum

The Umjetnička galerija Dubrovnik was founded in 1945 and was first housed in the Cerva-Pozza Palace on Pile. Since 1948 it has been located in its present building, the Banac Palace, which was designed from 1932 to 1939 as the family palace of the Dubrovnik shipowner Božo Banac by Lavoslav Horvat with Harold Bilinić, drawing on Dubrovnik Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The palace is a protected cultural monument.

The founder and owner of the gallery is the City of Dubrovnik. In 2005 the Galerija Dulčić Masle Pulitika on Držićeva poljana was made available to the gallery for use, and in 2008 the Atelijer Pulitika in the Tvrđava sv. Ivana (St John’s Fortress). The institution thus has three exhibition spaces, in which its own collection is kept and displayed alongside exhibitions.

The collection today numbers 2804 artworks acquired through purchases, donations and gifts. The modern section, from the late 19th century to the Second World War, relies mainly on artists connected with Dubrovnik – Vlaho Bukovac, Mato Celestin Medović, Ignjat Job, Gabro Rajčević and Ivan Ettore – alongside classics of Croatian modern painting and sculptors such as Ivan Meštrović and Frane Kršinić. The contemporary section comprises painting, sculpture and graphic art and, in recent years, also photography, video and installations. It is led by the Dubrovnik artists Ivo Dulčić, Antun Masle and Đuro Pulitika, and by representatives of groups and movements such as EXAT 51, Gorgona and Nove tendencije.
