About the museum
The museum opened in July 1967 in the Frankopan Castle (Stari grad) in Ogulin, after the rooms had been prepared for museum use from 1960 to 1967. It was founded by the municipal committee of SUBNOR (association of veterans of the People's Liberation Struggle) and initially displayed the workers' movement and the People's Liberation Struggle. From 1974 to 1978 it operated independently; from 1979 it was part of the Workers' University, later the Pučko otvoreno učilište (Public Open Learning Centre) Ogulin, from which it separated on 1 April 2018.
The castle was built around 1500 by Bernardin Frankopan on the edge of the canyon of the Dobra river as one of the fortresses against Ottoman incursions; the court chapel of St Bernardine was also consecrated beside it. From 1746 to 1873 the 3rd Ogulin infantry regiment was stationed in it, and from 1865 it served as a court prison.
The collections include mountaineering, archaeological, ethnographic, civic, art, stone monuments and Homeland War collections; the castle also houses Ćelija br. 6 and the Memorial Room of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić.
