About the museum

The memorial museum is housed in the birthplace of the poet, writer, journalist and antifascist fighter Ivan Goran Kovačić (1913–1943) in Lukovdol in Gorski kotar. The two-storey stone house in the civic style was built in 1905 by the poet’s grandfather. Today it is run by the Hrvatski povijesni muzej (Croatian History Museum) as its outdoor display.

The first permanent exhibition opened in 1975 under the management of the Muzej revolucije naroda Hrvatske (Museum of the Revolution of the Peoples of Croatia). The new exhibition opened on 11 July 2003, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Goran’s birth and the 60th anniversary of his death. Its author is Lucija Benyovsky. The display presents Goran’s entire literary oeuvre through works of art, documentary material, photographs, personal and family objects, and ethnographic material from Gorski kotar.

The exhibition is divided into five themes: “Goran i Lukovdol”, “Goran književnik i novinar”, “Goran u partizanima”, “Goranov zavičaj” and “Goranovo proljeće”. The central room shows a reconstruction of the poet’s workspace with his personal library. The section on the partisan days also covers his best-known poem “Jama”.
