About the museum
The Mestna muzejska zbirka Črnomelj (Črnomelj Town Museum Collection) is housed in the birthplace of the poet and writer Miran Jarc. It opened in 1997, and the permanent exhibition was updated in 2003. The founder is the Municipality of Črnomelj; it is run by the Bela krajina Development and Information Centre (Razvojno informacijski center Bela krajina).
The permanent exhibition “Črnomelj na prepihu tisočletij” (Črnomelj in the Draughts of the Millennia) focuses on the history of the town, its surroundings and its people. It speaks through archaeological material and archival sources, and the past is complemented by prints, photographs and reconstructions. The town stands on a site that, with short interruptions, has been inhabited for more than three thousand years.
The exhibition is arranged on three levels: on the ground floor are rooms on Bela krajina and its people, the early inhabitants and the Romans, and the late antique settlement; on the first floor, on Črnomelj as a border town in the Middle Ages, in the Turkish period and in the 19th century; on the second floor, on the period from the Illyrian Provinces to independent Slovenia.
