About the museum
The Český svět open-air museum was founded in Dolní Řasnice in the Frýdlant region on the initiative of Milan Maršálek. It began with the rescue of the smithy of Ondřej Stelzig from 1660, which Maršálek bought at his own expense to save it from demolition. Supporters later joined him in the civic association Český svět.
The site of the former rychta is gradually being supplemented with buildings that were rescued from elsewhere in the region. These include a podstávkový výměnek (a retirement cottage of the Upper Lusatian type) moved from Předlánce, an approximately 300-year-old weaving house from Chrastava with two historical weaving looms, and an approximately 200-year-old šprýchar (a storehouse) from Dolní Olešnice. The výměnek received an international award from the Umgebindeland society in Zittau.
Podstávkové domy are buildings in which the upper floor stands on a separate structure above the lower one; in this border region of the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany they have been found since the 16th century. The site also includes a small chapel and collections, for example a set of about sixty hunting trophies. The association works to protect these buildings and to have them added to the UNESCO list.
