About the museum

Žijící skanzen (Living Open-Air Museum) is run by the Lunaria association, which was founded in 1996 in Bílý Potok pod Smrkem and has been based in Jindřichovice pod Smrkem since 1998. The association works on the protection of nature and landscape, traditional ecological farming, environmental education and the restoration of the cultural heritage of the Frýdlant region.

The core of the site is an approximately 300-year-old podstávkový house, which is gradually being restored. Its farm section houses the museum, while people live permanently in the residential part. The association has also built a second podstávkový house and a small wind mill of the turbine type, which still grinds grain.

The exhibition shows rural life, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors can see agricultural machines, a threshing machine and mill, workshop equipment such as a smithy hearth, as well as kitchen utensils and a weaving loom. The mill houses an exhibition on windmills in the Czech Republic. The site includes pastures with farm animals, ecologically farmed landscape and, in summer, an exhibition on wolves called “Nebojme se vlka nic”. The Svobodná škola Ronja school is also based at the open-air museum, and the festival Žijící srdce takes place there.
