About the museum
Czarci Młyn is a water mill in Czerniawa-Zdrój, today within the boundaries of Świeradów-Zdrój, built around 1890. Original milling equipment typical of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries has survived; it was installed in the so-called American system, with fully mechanised transport of grain. Until 1951 the mill was driven by an overshot water wheel 6.5 metres in diameter; after a failure of the wheel’s axle, the works resumed operation in 1957 with electric drive. The building is listed as a historic monument.
In 2011–2012 the building was renovated: a replica of the water wheel was installed and the tourist infrastructure was expanded. The mill belongs to the municipality of Świeradów-Zdrój and forms part of the route “Śladami Izerskich Tajemnic”.
In three rooms – the Chlebowa (Bread) room, the room with the Czarcie Koło (Devil’s Wheel) and the Technologiczna (Technology) room – visitors see historic milling and baking equipment, including grinders, roller crushers, a grain cleaning machine, elevators, silos and winnowing equipment, as well as a hundred-year-old working bread oven. Visitors follow the path from grain to loaf; bread-baking workshops take place in the building, and bread baked on site is sometimes served.
