About the museum
The museum in Holíč opened in 1992 as an outlying exhibition of the Záhorské múzeum in Skalica, with a collection of ceramics. It was housed in one of the manufactory buildings, which were built in 1755 by František Štefan Lotrinský (Francis Stephen of Lorraine), husband of Maria Theresa. In 2009 the statute of the Mestské múzeum v Holíči was approved, with the town of Holíč as its founder, and the museum was entered in the Register of Museums and Galleries.
In 2010 the museum moved to the newly renovated part of Holíč Castle, where it is still located. Since 2012 it has operated as the Mestské múzeum a galéria; the gallery uses the premises of the former faience manufactory and, since 2020, also the left-wing depository.
The exhibition is devoted mainly to the life of the Habsburgs in Holíč and includes a collection of Holíč faience, copies of engravings by Leopold Schmalhofer, restored Chinese wallpapers from the Chinese Hall, a hunting room and a memorial room of Oto Kroupa and Jaroslav Prílučík. In some rooms, fragments of preserved murals have been uncovered.
