About the museum
The foundations of the museum were laid by the physician MUDr. Pavel Blaho, who at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries collected folk products, embroidery, tools and especially ceramics. He first made the collection accessible in 1903 in a private house, and in 1905 the museum received three rooms on the upper floor of the new cultural house on the Skalica square. It was the first nationally oriented museum in Slovakia founded by a private individual. After 1945 management passed to the municipal national committee; in 1952 the Okresné vlastivedné múzeum (District Local History Museum) was established, and from 1965 the institution has operated under its present name, Záhorské múzeum. Its founder is the Trnava Self-Governing Region.
Since the end of 1989 the museum has been based in the Mittákovský dom on the northern side of the square, originally a Renaissance burgher house which in the 17th century arose from the merging and rebuilding of two medieval houses. In the past it belonged to the Pálfi family, and it gained its Neo-Renaissance appearance at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries under the Mitták family. Two rooms preserve Renaissance vaults on a massive column.
The permanent exhibition, opened in 2005 for the museum's centenary, comprises ethnographic, archaeological and historical sections. It presents Záhorie, ceramics and Blaho's collection of earthenware jug products, Holíč faience, viticulture, crafts and guilds, the Habáni (Hutterite community), the cooperative movement and important personalities of the region. The museum also manages outlying exhibitions nearby, for example the Múzeum v Kopčanoch, the Habánsky dom vo Veľkých Levároch or the Družstevné múzeum Samuela Jurkoviča v Sobotišti.
