About the museum
The Gallery of Fine Art in Náchod was founded in 1966, continuing the work of the Municipal Picture Gallery, whose collections were first presented to the public in 1934. Today it is run by the Hradec Králové Region as a contributory organisation.
It is housed in the former palace riding hall, which was rebuilt for the gallery's needs between 1978 and 1983 to a design by Josef Wagner. When it opened, it was among the most modern gallery buildings in Czechoslovakia in terms of its architecture, its step-free access to the gallery walkway and the equipment of its storerooms.
The gallery's collections, which in 2024 contained more than 6,000 exhibits, are divided into painting, drawing, graphic art, sculpture, photography, applied art and media. The most important part is a set of Russian painting from the 19th and early decades of the 20th century, including works by émigrés who lived in interwar Czechoslovakia. Regional work is another emphasis. Since 2022 the gallery has also operated an exhibition off-space, GVUN Malá, in the Španielova pasáž in the centre of the town.
The gallery prepares author, thematic and historical exhibitions, supplemented by guided tours, workshops and lectures. It regularly holds the regional showcase Náchodská výtvarná zima (Náchod Winter of Fine Art), which began in 1984, the competitive showcase Naše galerie for non-professional artists, and the cycle Umělci do 40 let (Artists under 40).
