Dělostřelecká tvrz Hůrka

Extensive artillery fortress of the Czechoslovak fortification line near Králíky, with six opened objects and two kilometres of underground passages.

About the museum

The Hůrka fortress was built as the easternmost of the artillery fortresses of the Králíky fortified area. The area around Králíky and the Kladsko Salient was among the most endangered parts of the republic, because an attacker could quickly advance through it into the interior of the country. The first design, from February 1935, placed the fortress further east at Maliník, but in the end the hill Berghöhe, today's Hůrka, was chosen, and by June 1935 the fortress had essentially taken its present form.

Today six objects are open to the public: two infantry bunkers, an artillery bunker, a rotating turret, an entrance object and a separate observation post, linked by about two kilometres of underground passages and halls. According to the museum, the underground lies up to 59 metres below the surface and the garrison was to number 424 soldiers. Visitors walk with a guide along the gravity railway and the main gallery, past the engine room and the filter room, to the barracks halls, where there are exhibitions on weapons and ammunition and the exhibition “S padákem nad hlavou” (“With a Parachute Over Your Head”). Traces of German tests from the occupation period have also been preserved.

The fortress is run as a museum by the Society of Friends of Czechoslovak Fortifications (Společnost přátel čs. opevnění), which also manages the Bouda fortress. The tour routes are continually being extended, from a short mini-tour to circuits lasting several hours.
