About the museum
Infantry bunker K-S 14 “U cihelny” was commissioned on 9 June 1936 as part of the fortification line near Králíky and was completed, equipped and armed by September 1938. During the evacuation of the fortifications by the Czechoslovak army, the corporal Arnošt Hrad, who refused to leave his bunker, fatally shot himself here on the night of 3 October 1938; his story remains the central theme of the museum to this day. In 1940 the German army used the structure to test fortress weapons, which considerably damaged both the building and the weapons.
In the 1950s the bunker lost its armoured bells, and it was later adapted several times for other purposes, most recently as a backup transmitting station of military intelligence. From 1998 the building has been restored and gradually opened to the public. Since 2002 it has been looked after by the Military History Club Erika Brno, which set up the museum in it.
The exhibitions cover the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 and the return of the legions, the beginnings of wartime surgery, the construction of the fortifications in 1935–1938, the Czechoslovak army up to 1938, and a unique exhibition on the Finance Guard (Finanční stráž) from 1918 to 1948. Visitors can also see the crew quarters, the engine room, the telephonist's station and the room dedicated to Corporal Hrad.
