About the museum

The Východočeský památník celnictví (East Bohemian Customs Memorial) in Králíky was established as a permanent exhibition on the history of customs, run by the Muzeum K-S 14 “U cihelny” together with the Vojensko-historický klub ERIKA Brno (ERIKA Military-Historical Club Brno). It follows on from the memorial and exhibition of the financial guard in the underground of the K-S 14 infantry bunker and extends them with an account of the history of customs from antiquity to the present.

The exhibition guides visitors through the individual periods: from the beginnings of customs in ancient Egypt, through the Middle Ages and the modern era, to the First Republic, the occupation, socialist Czechoslovakia and the time after 1989. The history of the customs service is set in the wider context of the trade in goods. On display are the House of St Matthew in life size, the office of a senior customs official of the Austrian provincial government, a half-timbered Finanzwache building, the office of a customs official from the First Republic, uniforms of customs officers and the financial guard, scales, weights, and hollow and linear measures, including examples of the Czech and Viennese ell.

The exhibition also presents personalities connected with customs, for example the painter Henri Rousseau, Josef Němec, or Emil Martinec, author of the first customs act of independent Czechoslovakia. Visitors can hear unique sound recordings of smugglers and officers of the financial guard from the first half of the 20th century, and in period photographs see the customs service and smuggling under socialism. The collections come from the museum’s own holdings and from other institutions and former customs officers. For schools, families and curious adults, a game called Staň se dobrým celníkem has been prepared.
