About the museum
The 10-Z shelter lies in the rock beneath Špilberk and was built during the Second World War. Construction was probably directed from the end of 1943 by the German building authority Tiefbauamt Brünn, and in November 1944, during the first major Allied air raid on Brno, it served as the still unfinished air-raid shelter for civilians and anti-aircraft units. No written records of its construction have survived.
In 1946–1948 the underground spaces were used by the wholesale wine company Löwy a Šmíd. Shortly after the February coup of 1948, the Communists took them away and later built an anti-nuclear shelter there, protected against weapons of mass destruction. The shelter, codenamed 10-Z (1959), was intended for the political representatives of the city and region and could hold up to 500 people for three days. The army administered it, and until 1993 it was strictly secret.
Today the shelter is opened to the public by the non-profit company AMERFO, which wants to make it a meeting place open to everyone. Visitors can walk through the exhibition on their own; since autumn 2016 audiovisual projections have been installed in the tunnels, and small groups can book guided excursions to the shelter's technical facilities. The offer also includes school programmes, corporate events and experience stays “24 h v krytu”.

| Good to know | The exhibition can be visited on your own without a guide; for foreign visitors the museum provides a plan and a brief history in English and other languages. A guide in a foreign language (English, Russian, German, Polish, Hungarian) is available by prior arrangement. The shelter stays at 18 °C all year round, which is why a period military coat is available for excursions. |
