About the museum

The Moravian Gallery in Brno is a museum of art and design that holds more than 200,000 works of art in its collections. In scope it is the second largest institution of this type in the Czech Republic, and it covers fine art and design from the Middle Ages to the present day. It was founded in 1961 and gradually acquired several buildings in the centre of Brno and beyond.

The main visitor building is the Pražák Palace on Husova Street, which also houses the gallery's directorate. It contains the permanent exhibition ART IS HERE, with modern art from the first half of the 20th century and new art after 1945, as well as temporary exhibitions, a café, a children's play room, a gallery shop, a library open to the public since 1883 and the public art lending library Artotéka. Nearby stands the Museum of Applied Arts from 1882, a monumental historicist building on the Brno ring road. After the Second World War it was adapted by Bohuslav Fuchs, and the latest reconstruction was completed in 2021; today it houses the exhibition ART DESIGN FASHION, devoted to design and fashion.

The Governor's Palace (Místodržitelský palác) on Moravské náměstí originated from an Augustinian monastery, which Mořic Grimm rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century. The gallery has managed it since 1990 and is gradually opening it to the public after reconstruction. Other sites include the Jurkovič Villa in Žabovřesky, the gallery's largest collection item, the birthplace of the architect Josef Hoffmann in Brtnice, and, since 2025, the Open Depository in Řečkovice, which offers the public a view behind the scenes of collection care.
