About the museum

The Městské muzeum (Municipal Museum) is the first museum of the town of Bohumín and opened to the public on 1 July 2016. The permanent exhibition Bohumín – pohledy do minulosti města (Bohumín – Views into the Town's Past) was created in the basement of the renovated Art Nouveau house Pod Zeleným dubem in Old Bohumín. It covers about 60 square metres and is divided into three parts.

The best-known exhibit is the Old Bohumín treasure, namely 54 coins from the years 1660 to 1860, which were found in the pedestal of the statue of St John of Nepomuk on the square during its restoration. Other notable objects include a mammoth stool and a vertebra, which turned up in the meanders of the River Oder, and a First Republic border stone. The exhibition is supplemented by objects on loan from the defunct museum of the ironworks and wire works, for example period píchačky (tools), pincers and a commemorative plaque for the first pouring of iron in 1888, as well as a historic chasuble from the local parish, school teaching aids and a replica of the Bohumín folk costume.

In September 2024 floods damaged the museum and it was closed. After repairs it reopened in July 2025.
