About the museum
The museum is housed in the Kněžice chateau, no. 1, and is run by the municipality of Kněžice as part of the municipal library. It was established in 2003, after the chateau was restored. The chateau probably stands on the site of a 14th-century fortified manor built by the Hrutovice family. It received its present Renaissance form at the end of the 16th century as a hunting lodge of the Valdštejn family; later it belonged to the Collalto family until 1945 and was altered in the Baroque and Classicist styles.
After 1945 the chateau was taken over by an agricultural cooperative; after 2000 the municipality acquired it and restored it in 2000–2003. Today it houses the municipal office and the library, and one room contains a permanent historical and local-history exhibition, Živá a neživá příroda v okolí Kněžic (Living and Non-Living Nature around Kněžice), made up of panels about the nature of the surrounding area.
