About the museum
On the morning of 22 May 1808, a meteor shower fell on Stonařov, bringing down hundreds of stones from the sky. The event was investigated by the Viennese naturalist Karl von Schreibers, and the fall at Stonařov became one of the stimuli for the scientific study of meteorites. The fallen stones are today scattered across world collections.
The Muzeum meteoritů (Museum of Meteorites) was founded by the market town of Stonařov on 23 June 2012 as a project co-financed from European rural development funds under the LEADER programme. It is housed in the building of the market-town office, in the former council chamber. For the 200th anniversary of the fall, a separate memorial to the meteorites was already unveiled in 2008; it stands outside the museum.
The exhibition gathers documents on the meteorite fall, fragments of the Stonařov meteorites and copies of the largest pieces. Visitors can also see the baptismal certificate of the asteroid Stonařov, panels on the history of the market town and archaeological finds from the surroundings. The museum is managed by Mgr. Ivan Šulc.
