About the museum

The exhibition Z dávných i nedávných dob Brtnice a okolí (“Brtnice and Surroundings in Past and Recent Times”) is housed in the so-called Valdštejn House, No. 74, on náměstí Svobody, which was formed by joining two medieval houses. The house was built in stone as early as the Gothic period, in the mid-15th century, and about two hundred years later it was joined into a single unit. Of the original form, a large vaulted late Gothic hall, a portal shaped like a donkey’s back, a stone cellar with a spring and two black kitchens have survived. The façade has trompe-l’œil plaster, beneath which four layers of older decorative plasters were found. Stone slabs from the demolished synagogue are built into the courtyard wall.

The museum was founded on 21 January 2011, and the town’s information centre is also located in the same building. The exhibition deals with important events from the centuries-long history of the town, personalities, houses and crafts, and displays objects that document the past. The collection includes about 350 objects and roughly one hundred photographs and documents. Special emphasis is placed on the year 1234, when the town was founded, the year 1486, when it was elevated to a small town, and the year 2000, when Brtnice gained the status of a town.
