About the museum
Petr Bezruč, whose real name was Vladimír Vašek, is one of the most important poets at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and entered literature with the collection Slezské písně (Silesian Songs). Together with the poet Otakar Bystřina he bought the fojtství (the village reeve's estate) in Staré Hamry, today Ostravice. He liked it mainly because the Ostravice river flowed nearby, in which he liked to bathe.
After Bystřina's death the joint ownership was divided, and Bezruč received the barn, part of the garden, a clearing and a forest. In the early 1930s he had the barn rebuilt, with the help of friends, into a residential log cabin according to his own design, which stands to this day.
The Slezské zemské muzeum acquired the cabin in 1958 as part of the poet's estate. It left the residential part in its original form, with the interior that Bezruč had designed himself. In the adjoining woodshed, the exhibition Krajem Petra Bezruče was created in 1983; it presents the poet's life and the land beneath the Beskydy mountains captured in the Silesian Songs. When buying a ticket, a printed guide can be borrowed for the visit.
