About the museum

The tvrz (fortified manor house) in Kamenice was built around the 14th century as a Gothic tower and belonged to the Benedictine monastery in Třebíč. In the 16th century it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, received an additional storey and rich sgraffito decoration. Later it was owned by private owners, including the Hrdlička family, who acquired it in 1816. Their descendants sold it to the town in 1959.

After a reconstruction in the 1970s the building served the public, and in 2012 the township of Kamenice opened a museum there. The township is the founder, and visits are possible by prior arrangement.

The exhibition occupies several rooms. The first contains the 1845 clock mechanism from the church of St James the Greater, a bell frame, wooden water pipes from the 16th century and an ice-cream machine. The second room is devoted to local nature, and the third to the history of the township, with a figure of Kateřina z Valdštejna (Kateřina of Valdštejn) in period costume. Further rooms show documents on serfdom, the history from the Thirty Years' War to the Second World War, and notable natives such as Vincenc Kramář or Jan Kolda.
