About the museum
The Oblastní galerie Vysočiny (Regional Gallery of Vysočina) is housed in two historic buildings in Jihlava. The house at Komenského 10 was created in 1864 by joining two neighbouring houses on long, narrow medieval plots. Older houses were destroyed by a fire in 1551; the Renaissance house completed in 1577 kept its portal, lower hall, cellar and upper hall. The house was adapted for gallery purposes at the beginning of the 1960s, and the first exhibition opened in it on 29 November 1964.
The building on Masarykovo náměstí 24 dates from the 16th century and has later Baroque elements. It was restored at the end of the 1980s, and a permanent exhibition opened in it in 1989. The gallery's collection contains over 6,000 works, from the 19th century through the avant-garde and modern art to contemporary Czech art.
The building in Komenského Street houses contemporary art, the experimental gallery Alternativa and, in the cellar, the IGLOO sound gallery, which focuses on artists working with sound. On Masarykovo náměstí, a permanent exhibition of a selection from the collections fills two floors, while short-term exhibitions are held on the ground floor and first floor. The gallery organises guided tours, discussions and creative workshops and runs a specialist library.
