About the museum
In the 19th century Jindřich Wankel tried to push upstream against the current of the Punkva, but a flooded siphon stopped him. In 1909 the first discovered parts of the caves were lit and opened to the public. In 1909–1914 Karel Absolon and his team discovered the dry part of the caves, and on 31 January 1914 a dry route linked the Pustý žleb gorge with the Macocha abyss.
In 1920 a unit led by Lieutenant Sláma pushed upstream along the Punkva and opened the Masarykův dóm, named after the first Czechoslovak president. After the Zlý sifon was overcome and a drainage adit was built, on 5 February 1933 Macocha and Pustý žleb were joined by a water route. Since then visitors have been able to travel by boat along the dry section up to the surface.
After 1947 a new operations building was added, in 1996 the route underwent a general reconstruction, and in 2014–2015 a new entrance building was built. In 2017 the fleet was renewed with ten new electric boats.
