About the museum
The first written mention of the caves dates from 1669, in a document by Johann Ferdinand Hertod of Todtenfeld. In 1748 the caves were documented by Jan Antonín Nagel, a Viennese court mathematician and physicist, who descended into the Stupňovitá propast (Stepped Abyss). In 1804 Emperor Francis I visited the caves with the empress.
In the second half of the 19th century Jindřich Wankel led speleological and palaeontological research, which uncovered remains of Pleistocene fauna. From 1881 individual parts of the caves were gradually opened up and linked together. In 1889–1910 Karel Absolon, together with Josef Brouška, explored the Šošůvské jeskyně.
The caves are an important site for bones of cave fauna, such as bears, lions and hyenas. The final section of the tour leads through Kůlna Cave, an archaeological site with remains of Neanderthal humans. In 1998 a new entrance complex by the road replaced the older ticket booths at the portal.
