About the museum

The Vrbecké muzeum is a private museum in house no. 38 in Hrubá Vrbka. The house originally belonged to the Jewish Reichsfeld family; the parents and a daughter perished in Auschwitz in 1943, while the sons Vilém and Josef survived; they joined the Czechoslovak army in Great Britain. After the communist coup the sons went into exile and the house was nationalised. Until the mid-1970s the offices of an agricultural cooperative were located here; after 1989 the house was returned to the original owners in restitution, and a carpentry workshop was set up in it.

In 2014 the house was bought by Stanislav Prášek, mayor of the village from 2006 to 2014, who had collected folk-culture objects his whole life. He opened the museum on 17 July 2020 in five rooms, complemented by a courtyard and an exhibition gallery.

On display are everyday objects from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as furniture, paintings, folk costumes, a tiled stove and a loom, as well as a furnished Slovácko cottage. The village's natives and personalities are commemorated here, including the Holý brothers, singer Martin Hrbáč and the band leader (primáš) Jožka Kubík. A special section is devoted to St Gorazd II, a native of Hrubá Vrbka, who was sentenced to death for sheltering paratroopers after the assassination of Heydrich.
